In her first campaign trip outside Uttar Pradesh, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to visit Silchar in southern Assam on April 14, 2019.
Priyanka will hold a two-hour roadshow in Silchar, the constituency of Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev. Silchar in Barak Valley will vote in the second phase on April 18th, 2019. Last week, Congress President Rahul Gandhi also sought a second term for Dev as he addressed a rally in Karimganj constituency.
Dev is battling both anti-incumbency and likely fallout of Congress’ opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 as she seeks another Lok Sabha term.

Though the Bill has found support in the Barak Valley, it has sparked strong protest in the rest of the Northeast, including Brahmaputra Valley. It may be mentioned that the Congress assured to scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which rocked the region, in its Lok Sabha elections manifesto. Despite opposition in other parts of Northeast, BJP has promised to bring in CAB with consultation and consensus
It may be mentioned that Priyanka joined the party in the month of January. She is the party’s general-secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh, overseeing an area containing one of the constituencies of the current prime minister Narendra Modi.
Her entry is regarded as a major boost to the Congress party’s campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha elections as she is considered a charismatic campaigner with a presence and appearance resembling her grandmother and former prime minister of India Indira Gandhi.
