India Hits 1 Billion Jabs Record; Wishes Pours In Across The World

GUWAHATI: Marking a historic step, India reached an important milestone in its fight against Covid-19, as the country’s total vaccinations surpassed 100 crore on Thursday.

India is only the second country to surpass the record of 100 crore vaccinations, following China, which has administered more than 200 crore doses.

While the vaccination rates in countries with huge populations, such as the United States, Brazil, and Indonesia, have been relatively stable, India’s has been steadily increasing.

Almost 75% of the eligible population has received at least the first dose, with eight states and UTs achieving 100% first-dose coverage.

According to government data, four more states and UTs had more than 90% coverage of the first dose.

The COVID-19 vaccination campaign in India began on January 16, 2021.

The vaccination was initially only available to Health Care Workers (HCWs). Front-line employees have been eligible for vaccination since February 2.

State and Central Police officers, Armed Forces personnel, Home Guards, Civil Defence & Disaster Management Volunteers, Municipal workers, Prison Staff, PRI Staff, and Revenue workers involved in containment and surveillance, Railway Protection Force, and election officials were among those involved.

The vaccination campaign was increased on March 1 to include anyone over the age of 60 and those over 45 with a list of 20 comorbidities.

From April 1, it was extended to all people above the age of 45. COVID-19 immunisation became available to all people above the age of 18 on May 1.

Taking to the twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India scripts history. We are witnessing the triumph of Indian science, enterprise and collective spirit of 130 crore Indians. Congrats India on crossing 100 crore vaccinations. Gratitude to our doctors, nurses and all those who worked to achieve this feat.”

After PM Modi tweet, wishes poured in for India across the world.

The World Health Organization, as well as the governments of Israel, the US and Sri Lanka, sent their best wishes to India after it made history by crossing the 100-crore mark in COVID-19 vaccine doses administered.
