Assam pugilist Shiva Thapa will step in the ring in the second edition of the India Open Boxing Meet to begin from May 20th, 2019 in his hometown -Guwahati.
The tournament will be held at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati where Shiva will fight in 60 kg category.
It may be mentioned that the pugilist, who was the bronze medalist in the World Championship 2015, had suffered a loss in the semi-finals in the first edition of the India Open at New Delhi in 2018.
The 25-year-old had won a silver medal in the GeeBee Boxing Tournament and a bronze medal in the Asian Championships in 2019.
Thapa is confident of an impressive performance in the upcoming event. “Yes, there are a lot of expectations from me for the gold. I recently got a bronze medal from the Asian Championships and that tells me that the gold is not far off,” Thapa said as quoted by The Hindu.
Shiva Thapa is ranked 3rd in the bantamweight category in the AIBA Men’s World Ranking. He is the third Indian to clinch Gold at the Asian Games. He is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
On the other hand, five woman pugilists including Boxer Lovlina Borgohain in 69 kg, Ankushita Boro in 64 kg, Pwilao Basumatary in 64 kg, Bhagyabati Kachari in 75 kg and Jamuna Boro will fight in the ring in 60 kg category.
