    Internationally Acclaimed Sattriya Dancer From Assam Indira PP Bora To Be Conferred With Padma Shri

    She was conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in Sattriya dance in 1996

    Internationally acclaimed exponent of Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi and Sattriya dances, Indira PP Bora from Assam is one among the 15 noted personalities from Northeast to be honoured with the coveted Padma awards 2020 this year. She will be honoured with the Padma Shri for her distinguished service.

    She was conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in Sattriya dance in 1996. Bora who is a leading pioneer of the dance form has immensely contributed towards art. She also choreographed a number of poems and songs of eminent artists and poets–Rabindra Nath Tagore, Bhupen Hazarika, Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Rabha and so on.

    She was selected for the ‘Guru Gopinath Desiya Natya Puraskaram, 2019’, by the Kerala government(the highest honour conferred by the State government every year for excellence in dance) for her role in popularising Sattriya dance.

    The award-winning danseuse from Assam has been delivering stellar performances together with her daughter Meneka PP Bora across the globe.

    ‘Sattriya Nritya’ originated in the eastern state of Assam is dance-drama performance art with origins in the Vaishnavism monasteries of Assam under the patronage of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. It was recognized as a classical dance by Sangeet Natak Akademi of India in 2000.

    It may be mentioned that as many as 141 personalities will be conferred with the Padma awards this year– Padma Vibhushan for 7, Padma Bhushan for 16 and Padma Shri for 118. The awards will be handed away by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the capital city at ceremonial functions.
