    Iran To Be Focus Country In Guwahati International Film Festival 2019

    Latin America and the Carribean countries will be the region of focus in Guwahati International Film Festival 2019

    As Guwahati is gearing up for the third edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) which will begin from October 31st, 2019, Iran will be the focus country this year.

    GIFF is a seven-day film festival organized by Jyoti Chitrabon owned by the Assam government in association with Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute. The festival will be held in three auditoriums at Srimanta Sankardev Kalashetra and one at Jyoti Chitrabon.

    Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Kumar Doley announced this during a presser on September 30th, 2019 and said that this year Iran will be focus country. More than 100 films from around 65 countries will be screened during the festival.

    The opening film of the festival will be The Charcoal, an Iranian film directed by Esmaeel Monsef who will be present during the inaugural programme. Renowned Polish filmmaker Krzystof Zanussi will be the chief guest in the festival.

    The plot of the movie is based in rural northwest Iran where a charcoal producer is pushed into a tragic spiral after his son is sentenced to jail, evades to Azerbaijan.

    It may be mentioned, apart from Iran, Latin America and the Carribean countries will be focused on the festival.

    The festival will have eight categories which will include, world cinema, Indian cinema, competition section, northeast kaleidoscope, tribute section to Girish Karnad and Mrinal Sen, retrospective section by Zanussi and 150 years of celebrating Mahatma Gandhi.  

    Students from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Odisha besides students from the northeast will attend the festival this year.
