It’s Fasting, not Feasting: Raijor Dal demands Akhil Gogoi’s release

The NIA accused Gogoi of sending a group of KMSS to some secret Maoist camps of Odisha for training on weapons

GUWAHATI: At the time when the entire state of Assam was on a feasting mode during Raijor Dal the Magh or Bhogali Bihu celebration, members of Raijor Dal, a newly floated regional party were fasting demanding the release of their leader Akhil Gogoi from jail.

Started on Wednesday, the fasting protest of the members of the party continued till Thursday.

Gogoi, who was recently named as president of Raijor Dal has been behind the bars since December 2019. He was arrested during the anti-Citiznehip Amendment Act (CAA) protests in the state and then was booked under sedition and accused of having links with the CPI (Maoists).

Dhaijjya Konwar, a senior leader of the party said, “We are in no mood of festivities. BJP led state government is in fear of Akhil Gogoi and has kept him in jail slapping false allegations.” Konwar was on the fast too.

He added that the government has been trying all means to stop Akhil Gogoi’s bail and afraid that if the peasant leader is out, the forthcoming election would be difficult for them. Assam is eying at Assembly elections in April-May.

Along with Konwar, Bitu Sonowal and Manas Konwar were also fasting. All of them were arrested along with Akhil Gogoi but were released on bail later.

Recently, the Gauhati high court has rejected the bail prayer of Gogoi. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing Gogoi’s case, accused the latter of sending a group of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) to some secret Maoist camps of Odisha for training on weapons.

Konwar informed that soon they would move the Supreme Court demanding justice.
