Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Tezpur Ram Prasad Sarmah joined the Congress on March 1st, 2020.
He joined the party in presence of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora, Leader of Opposition, Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia and other party leaders.
Sarmah had last year resigned from the BJP as his name was not in the list of probable candidates for Tezpur constituency. Surprising many, the party fielded sitting MLA and minister Pallab Lochan Das.
In a Facebook post last year, Sarmah wrote that he felt insulted when his name did not find a place in the shortlisted panel of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.
Sarmah had earlier said that his grandfather was a founder-member of the Assam Congress and he himself was once a NSUI general secretary of district level. The politician said that he will work to strengthen the organisation base of the party.
Sarmah’s entry into the party, is believed, will help it strengthen its base among the Gorkha community ahead of the Assembly polls slated next year.
