Guwahati: Central Assam’s Nagaon district superintendent of police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip on Saturday said that appropriate action as per law will be taken against those who attended the Janaza (funeral) of religious leader Late Moulana Khairul Islam Mufti at the Juria Dagaon playground on July 2.
Dilip said, “We have lodged two FIRs against a large number of moving people for not maintaining social distance and for not wearing face masks while attending the janaza. The gathering visibly violated the standard Covid management protocols issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.”
The SP further said, “We have collected video as well as still photographs of the unprecedented gathering. We are also examining if anyone were categorically involved in inviting such a large crowd.”
He informed Time8 that in order to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus, ‘total lockdown’ will be imposed in three villages located adjacent to the playground. A source of the district administration stressed that swab test for all the residents of the three villages will be collected at the earliest.
As per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, not more than a maximum of 20 people can attend funerals or last rites of a deceased during the lockdown being enforced due to the pandemic.
The religious leader, who passed away on Thursday due to old-age ailments, was the father of All India United Democratic Front MLA Aminul Islam.
