The Japanese Encephalitis death toll in Assam rose to 146 with one more case reported from western Assam’s Dhubri district according to National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin in Guwahati. A total of four positive JE cases were reported in the state on August 16th, 2019. A total of 614 positive JE cases have been reported so far according to the official data. On August 14th, 2019, a death case was reported from Barak Valley’s Cachar district.
JE is an infection of the brain caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). While most infections result in little or no symptoms, occasional inflammation of the brain occurs. In these cases, symptoms may include headache, vomiting, fever, confusion and seizures.
However, the number in death cases is on the decline in the state from the beginning of August is a good sign and also has shown the efforts and sincerity of the health officials, officials said.
Earlier, JE and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) claimed around 200 lives in Bihar which had thrown the state’s public health experts into a tizzy.
