After an armed and masked mob attacked students and teachers at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi Police has registered an FIR against JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others for attacking security guards and vandalising the server room on January 4th, 2020.

The FIR has been filed based on a complaint filed by the JNU administration which claimed that Aishe along with others tried to stop students from registering for the winter semester and “indulged in physical violence”, “pushed lady guards” and “threatened” guards and damaged the server room.

The JNU administration has claimed the server room was damaged due to the ongoing standoff between students and the university authorities over a hike in hostel fees.

The Delhi Police has filed three FIRs in connection with the violence but failed to make any arrests in the case even 48 hours after the attack.

Violence broke out at JNU on January 5th, 2020 after masked men armed with sticks, iron rods and stones attacked students and teachers and vandalised property on the campus. The JNUSU and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad blamed each other for the violence that continued for over two hours.

Aishe was “continuously” attacked with an iron rod and has received 16 stitches on her head. She alleged it was an organised attack and that there was a nexus of JNU security and vandals.

The Delhi Police also formed a fact-finding committee under the authority of the Joint Commissioner of Police to investigate the incident in the JNU campus.
