Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on January 6th, 2020 issued an appeal to all students to maintain peace on the campus. He also stated that the top priority is to protect the academic interest of the students.

The statement comes after the students at the Sabarmati Hostel, Mahi Mandvi Hostel, Periyar Hostel hostels of JNU have allegedly been attacked by ‘masked mob’ on January 5th, 2020. Several students and teachers were injured in the attack.

On the other hand, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) blamed Kumar for allowing the attack on students and teachers on the campus and also called for his resignation. In a statement issued by JNUSU, whose president Aishe Ghosh is among those injured and were seen bleeding, has called Kumar a “mobster who perpetuates violence in the university”.

“Mr Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, it is time to go! The JNU community has a single point demand. That either this V-C resign or the MHRD as the competent authority remove him! Those who are trying to malign and destroy this university will not succeed.. JNU will live on!” JNUSU said in a statement.
