    Jolt in BJP: Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul quits party; Shiladitya may follow suit soon

    GUWAHATI: In a major development and a jolt to the BJP, former Assam Assembly deputy speaker and BJP’s Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul on Wednesday quit the saffron party after being denied a party ticket.

    Paul despite being a probable contender from the Barak valley seat, BJP has fielded Dipayan Chakraborty, one of the ‘close confidantes’ of Silchar Lok Sabha MP Rajdeep Roy in the 2021 poll from the constituency.

    Immediately after resigning from the party, Paul announced to be contesting as an independent candidate from the Silchar seat.

    He also alleged Silchar Lok Sabha MP Rajdeep Roy of ‘dividing’ the BJP members.

    Paul, a two-time MLA from Silchar Assembly constituency, was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of the Assam Assembly in 2016.

    Meanwhile, there were reports that BJP Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev too has tendered his resignation from the party after being denied of party ticket to contest the polls.
