Guwahati: The Jorhat district administration on Monday has directed a magisterial enquiry to be conducted on the unnatural death of one Jayanta Bora who died while in police custody.
He died at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital where he was taken after complaining of health issues.
Deputy commissioner Roshni A Korati had directed Additional Deputy Commissioner Tapan Gohain to conduct the probe and to submit the report within 10 days.
Sources said Bora who hailed from the district’s Titabor area was detained by security forces on Sunday. The security forces suspected that Bora was working as an over ground member of the banned outfit ULFA (Independent) and was recruiting fresh cadres for the militant group.
Sources said a joint sleuth of police and Army on Sunday night lunched a joint operation at Kakodonga Habi Gaon village in Jorhat district in search of ULFA-l/NSCN-IM militants.
“During search operation, security forces nabbed Bora. After reaching the police station, the youth complained of some health issue and then admitted to Borholla CHC. Later he was reffered to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on Monday. He was declared brought dead at JMCH,” sources said.
Villagers who refuted the charges of Bora being involved with any militant group alleged that he died of police atrocities.
The incident triggered massive protests in the district. Locals hit the street demanding justice.
