Guwahati: Social media to buzz with ‘#Justice for Akhil Gogoi’ and ‘#Release Akhil Gogoi’ hashtags from Thursday morning as well-wishers of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi have come up together and decided to intensify the ‘free-Akhil Gogoi’ campaign from July 9 onwards.
Akhil Gogoi Anuragi Mancha Asom (Akhil Gogoi Fan Club Assam), a Facebook page for the well-wishers of Gogoi on Wednesday posted an appeal urging the likeminded people to write two sentences on Facebook and Twitter – ‘#Justice for Akhil Gogoi’ and ‘#Release Akhil Gogoi’ as a part of the campaign on Thursday at 9 am.
Joining the appeal, Assam’s noted singer and lyricist Manash Robin also urged the likeminded people of the state to post the two sentences to intensify the demand for releasing Akhil Gogoi and other jailed KMSS leaders in the given time.
Manash Robin said, “Akhil Gogoi is not an anti-national neither the peasant leader is against the democracy. Taking advantage of the corona-induced lockdown, we are not given a chance to protest on the street by the government. Hence, social media is the only medium to raise our voices at this critical juncture.”
Alleging that during the 1962 Indo-China war, the Assamese failed to question the government of India while Bishnu Prashad Rabha was arrested on charges of sedition suspecting as an agent of China, Robin said, “The people of Assam have been repeating the same history of escapism in the case of Akhil Gogoi by maintaining silence.”
Robin added, “It appears, the Assamese are always self-centric and opportunistic and it has become a collective identity and attitude. It is time that we change this attitude and raise strong voices to the government to release Akhil Gogoi and the other KMSS leaders.”
It must be mentioned here that ever since the imposition of lockdown following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic; all forms of street protests and agitations have been banned. Under this given situation, the free-Akhil Gogoi movement has been confined to the social media campaign. `
The Dibrugarh University (DU) postgraduate students union (2018-19 batch) and the entire students’ fraternity of the colleges under the DU also appealed to join the campaign tomorrow. `
