GUWAHATI: Assam Police have apprehended at least five suspected rhino poachers from Kareng chapori area of Bokakhat in the Golaghat district on Friday.
One AK 56 rifle, one .315 rifle, 18 rounds of bullets of 303 rifle, 10 rounds of bullets of .315 rifle and eight rounds of ammunition of AK 56 rifle were also recovered from their possession.
Police have identified the arrestees as Hiralal Choudhury, Dipen Pegu, Bhaity Doley, Ranjit Kutum and Achinta Moran. Police said that the five were possibly a part of a large poaching racket and quizzing was on. More arrests expected, police said.
Police have intensified their operation against poachers following the killing of one rhino in the nearby Kaziranga national park recently.
A carcass of a fully grown one-horned rhino was found by the forest officials in a water body under the Kohora range area of Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday evening.
This was the first poaching incident in the park in 2021 after an interval of some nine months.
One empty cartridge of a .303 rifle was recovered at the crime scene. As per the forest officials, the rhino was probably killed by poachers at least 3-4 days prior to its finding.
In May 2020 poachers had killed and chopped off the horn of a rhino. Last year, at least three incidents of poaching of one-horned rhinos were reported from the Park.
