All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi, on November 21st, stirred a row with his comments on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in Assam.
Citing a new report which quoted BJP’s Assam leaders requesting the Central government to reject the recently-published NRC, Owaisi criticised the central government over the exercise.
“Khoda pahaad, nikla chooha (Mountain made out of a molehill). Now BJP wants to disown it, but find one all over India. Modi wants all Indians to yet again stand in line, detaining undocumented Indians and leaving minorities and the weak at the mercy of babus. Nowhere in the world are people put through such hardship,” the AIMIM Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad tweeted.
Welcoming the Centre’s stand after Union Home Minister Amit Shah told the Parliament that the NRC will be implemented nationwide, the Assam government has requested the Centre to reject the recently published NRC in the current form and include the state in the national NRC.
Assam Finance Minister and North East Democratic Alliance convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam NRC has failed to address the aspirations of people and therefore should be scrapped.
The names of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible and 19,06,657 persons were excluded from the final NRC list including those who did not submit claims. The final list was published by the Assam government on August 31st, 2019.
It may be mentioned, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said her Trinamool Congress government won’t allow the NRC in her state.
