Peasant rights organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on December 2nd, 2019 announced a series of protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The firebrand leader of KMSS, Akhil Gogoi claimed that the Bill will “damage, destruct” Assam and Northeast region.

Assam along with other Northeastern states are carrying out massive protests, call for shutdowns against the proposed Bill. The contentious Bill will be tabled in the ongoing winter session of parliament and the Centre will attempt to pass the Bill by December 10th, 2019.

Addressing a presser in Guwahati, Gogoi said that the KMSS will “not accept the Bill under any circumstances”. “We will launch the anti-bill movement in the state from today onwards,” KMSS adviser Gogoi said.

The KMSS workers and supporters will take to the streets opposing the Bill in Dhemaji on December 2nd, 2019. On December 3rd, 2019, a rally will be taken out from Guwahati Club, Ambari. “Massive protest will be staged at Dispur Last Gate on December 5th, 2019,” he said.

Last year, KMSS along with 69 other indigenous organisations had last year put up a strong resistance to the Bill.

Though the Bill was passed by the previous Lok Sabha in January 2019, it lapsed in the Rajya Sabha. The Bill was then referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament.
