Kolkata Doctors’ Assault: Protests Rock Medical Colleges In Assam

In the wake of attacks on resident doctors of the Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College in Kolkata on June 10th, 2019, doctors all across Assam staged protest condemning the incident on June 14th, 2019.

The doctors at the Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh took out a protest rally in the premises of the hospital. The doctors, wearing bandages on their heads, were seen holding placards and demanding safety and security of doctors in the hospital premises.

On the other hand, OPD services at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) were affected for two hours in the morning hours as doctors took out a protest rally where hundreds of doctors shouted slogans condemning the incident. The doctors expressed their strong solidarity with the victims of the mob attack incident in Kolkata.

It may be mentioned, an 80-year-old patient identified as Mohammad Syed died in the NRS Hospital on June 10th, 2019 following which the relatives of the deceased attacked the doctors alleging negligence on part of the doctors. Following the clash, two junior doctors were left with serious injuries.

Healthcare services at the private and government hospitals across the country got affected on June 14th, 2019 as scores of doctors boycotted the day in solidarity with the Kolkata doctors.
