The incident which took place in Gopal Jaroni of Gohpur in the Biswanath district has evoked harsh reactions from the locals who lambasted the state health department for their nonchalant attitude.

Pirome Kutum, the wife of Butum Medhi, delivered a baby girl in the sandbank due to unavailability of either a commutable bridge or road for an ambulance, despite several appeals.

“A cockboat and dilapidated bamboo bridge are our only saviours. We rang 108 when she started writhing in pain but the ambulance didn’t reach our village,” said Butum while talking to TIME8.
