The idea of ‘Festival Tourism’ that Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched in the 58th edition of his monthly radio program Mann Ki Baat will boost the economy of the country in parallel to increase in tourist flow and exchange of culture.
The Northeast region has immense potential in the tourism sector. There are around 145 tribal communities in the region out of which 78 are large communities each with a population of more than 5,000. Each and every community has its unique culture with specific language, festival, dance, music, food habits etc.
The ‘Festival Tourism’ will help in promoting the rich cultures and festivals of the region including Bihu, Holi, and Hornbill Festival etc. This will also help in exploring the festivals of smaller communities and taking them to the world platform.
All the state governments should focus on the idea conceived by the Prime Minister for a new revolution to mobilize the economy and social transformation. The Assam government should work on promoting other festivals of the state on the lines of Ambubachi Mela every year. Assam has a number of religious tourist spots including historical Kamakhya Temple and satras and National Parks.
If tourist flow to the state picks momentum, it would also benefit many unemployed youths of the state. We all know that youths from the state often go to other states in search of a job. This can be replaced with the festival tourism by generating employment to lakhs of well educated unemployed youths.
It is also the responsibility of the people to take the festivals and cultures without affecting its essence and originality to the world.
