Guwahati: In a major landslide mishap occurred this morning at Kharguli’s Hirambapur area, near Rajbhawan, a 21-year-old girl, identified as Priyanka Boro succumbed to injuries.
Reportedly, the mishap took place early in the morning at around 6 am.
The deceased was killed while a chunk of the nearby hill fell in the premises of her residence. “She (deceased) was sweeping the courtyard. All of a sudden a chunk of the hill fell down and Priyanka was almost buried live,” a relative said.
Late Priyanka was pursuing graduation in Guwahati College and was in the 6th semester. She topped the state in music in the 2015 HSLC examinations. She was also a niche performer of classical as well as folk dances.
The torrential rains, showing over the last a few days, have been triggering landslides in many parts of the city.
In an incident of landslide, more than hundreds of vehicles remained stranded along the National Highway 31 near Amingaon, in the outskirt of Guwahati, on Friday and Saturday.
Taking cognizance of the disaster, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called Assam’s health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and took stock of the situation over telephone. Shah also committed to extending all possible support to Sarma to mitigate the situation.
