LDP presses Dispur for early implementation of NRC in the state

Terang stressed that the ruling BJP is conspiring to create a vote bank comprising the excluded Bengali Hindus

GUWAHATI:  The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has pressed the state government of Assam for early implementation of the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) in Assam.

Assam state LDP Chairman Holiram Terang said, “The BJP-led Assam government is conspiring to re-conduct a fresh NRC with an intention to naturalise a large number of Bengali Hindus who were not included in the final list of the NRC.

Terang stressed that the ruling BJP is conspiring to create a vote bank comprising the excluded Bengali Hindus besides expanding the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)’s Hindutva agenda by providing them citizenships.

Citing a RTI report accessed on September 23, 2019, LDP’s National president Pradyut Borah said that the entire NRC exercise incurred an expenditure of Rs 1300 crore. “Re-conduct of the fresh NRC will turn a waste of the public exchequer and is against the very interest of the people of Assam.”

LDP state president Guna Gogoi also slammed the state government for not implementing the NRC in time. He said, “People of Assam had to go through hindrances and various difficulties to get their names included in the NRC. Even after so much of pain, if the BJP government attempts to re-conduct a fresh NRC, it will indicate the government’s disregard towards a constitutional document.”

The LDP also made it clear that it will keep opposing the government’s move to re-conduct a fresh NRC.
