Leadership Is Knowing The Limits Of One’s Office: Owaisi Attacks Army Chief Over His CAA Remarks

It is about understanding the idea of civilian supremacy and preserving the integrity of the institution that you head: Asaduddin Owaisi

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi came down heavily on the Army chief General Bipin Rawat for his comments on student leaders in relation to the ongoing protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA).

Owaisi, while addressing the media, said, “Everyone has the right to protest. Even Prime Minister claims that he protested during the Emergency. If there is violence during the protest, there is police to control it. Why is army interfering in the civilian matter?.”

He added, “Leadership is knowing the limits of one’s office. It is about understanding the idea of civilian supremacy & preserving the integrity of the institution that you head.”

Speaking at an event in Delhi, Rawat criticised the arson and violence during protests against the new citizenship law. He said that instigating large crowds to turn violent and carry out arson doesn’t amount to leadership. Rawat is due for retirement on December 31st, 2019.

“Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate directions, as we are witnessing in a large number of universities and college students…the way they are leading masses of crowds to carry out arson and violence in our cities and towns. This is not leadership,” India’s Chief of Army Staff said, as quoted by ANI.

The Congress leaders too slammed Rawat over his remarks on CAA. Several people have died across the country in the protests against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens.

The agitations were initially fierce in Assam, but later spread nationwide and grew in intensity after the Delhi Police were accused of using excessive force against the students at Jamia Millia Islamia University.
