Lights, Plants, Graffiti: Guwahati Gears Up To Welcome PM Modi, Shinzō Abe

In Guwahati, the meeting between Modi-Abe will take place at the Old Deputy Commissioner’s Residence on December 15th, 2019

With just a few days left for one of the most-awaited meetings in the State history, frenzied activity is underway to set the stage in Guwahati.

The city is being spruced up to welcome Japan Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Indo-Japan Annual Summit scheduled for December 15th and 16th, 2019.

Preparations are in full swing to welcome Abe in Assam. Walls have been painted with colourful graffiti depicting Japanese and Indian cultural ties in Machkhowa in welcoming the Japanese Prime Minister. Beautification works around LGBI airport are also nearly complete.

On December 7th, 2019, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected the Lachit Ghat in Machkhowa to take stock of the preparations. The Brahmaputra riverfront is being decked up ahead of Abe’s visit scheduled on December 15th, 2019.

The road-dividers and footpath railings are being freshly painted. Decorative lights and plant pots have been installed across city routes from where the convoy of Prime Ministers of both sides are likely to pass.

Security has also been beefed up across the city. No stone is being left unturned by security agencies to ensure full-proof security. Surveillance cameras have been fixed at strategic locations. City hotels, resorts have been asked to double-check their entries.

In Guwahati, the meeting between Modi-Abe will take place at the Old Deputy Commissioner’s Residence which has been converted into a heritage building a few years ago.

Modi and Abe will also enjoy a boat ride at the Brahmaputra river on the MV Rudra Singha and visit the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. One of the two hotels in Guwahati – Vivanta and Radisson Blu –is expected to be the venue for a business summit to be co-hosted by CII.
