GUWAHATI: Railway ministry to consider resumption of local train services in the state. The move came after Leader of Opposition in Assam, Debobrata Saikia has requested to resume the local train service in the state which has been on halt owing to Covid 19 pandemic.
Saikia in a letter to Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways, said that due to the suspension of the local train services in the state, commoners have been facing hardship in travelling.
“Those affected the most by this scenario are employees who travel daily to their workplaces in town and cities and return home in the evening, along with farmers, petty traders and vendors who sell their wares in urban areas on a daily basis,” the letter said.
He cited that since local train services, including short-distance services, have resumed in states like Maharashtra after the lockdown ended, the railway ministry should also consider the same for Assam.
Saikia added, “The series of lockdowns took their toll on the economically weaker sections of society in Assam, just as they did elsewhere in the country. Operation of normal train services is a dire necessity for such people when it comes to their daily livelihood. As such, I request you kindly to issue necessary orders for the resumption of local train services in Assam as early as possible.”
Responding to Saikia’s request, Goyal replied in a letter, “I have received your letter regarding resumption of local train services in Assam. The letter has been sent to the concerned directorate for consideration and necessary action as per rules.”
