Guwahati, March 13, 2019

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Assam in alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), BJP general secretary Ram Madhav announced on March 12th, 2019.

It may be mentioned that the AGP-BJP alliance, along with BPF, had contested the 2016 Assam Assembly elections and defeated the Congress.

“The BJP and AGP have decided to work together in the coming Parliament election in Assam to defeat Congress. The BPF will be the third partner in the alliance. We will together ensure that Congress is defeated in all the 14 seats of Assam,” Madhav said.

It may be recalled that AGP’s three ministers in the Sarbananda Sonowal government – Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta and Phani Bhushan Choudhury, had resigned in order to protest the NDA-led Centre’s decision to get the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 passed in the Parliament.

The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019. The first phase of voting will take place on April 11th, 2019 while the last phase will be held on May 19th, 2019. The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said the BJP and its allies will win between 19 and 21 seats out of the Northeast’s 25 Lok Sabha seats. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP won seven of the state’s 14 seats and AGP drew a blank.
