Social media will be under the scanner to counter spreading of rumours, hate speeches via various social media platforms ahead of the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in Assam.

Addressing a presser here on April 1st, 2019, Kuladhar Saikia, Assam Director General Of Police said, “The district police chiefs have been directed to monitor the social media. They will track the misuse of social media to avert any untoward situation. Strict actions will be taken against the law-breakers.”

Assam’s 14 constituencies will face elections in 3 phases on April 11th, April 18th and April 23rd, 2019.  Over 2.17 crore people will be eligible to vote in the three-phase Lok Sabha elections. The voting in Assam will take place at 28,143 polling stations. There are also about 60,000 service voters, who are staying outside the state and will vote through postal ballot.

Saikia further mentioned that 33 companies of Central Paramilitary Forces have reached Assam as part of security measures for Lok Sabha elections in the state. “Security requirements will be reviewed and more forces can be deployed as per need. 90 paramilitary forces will ensure the security of voters in Assam,” Saikia added.

He also informed that 20,000 licensed arms have been deposited son far since February 1st, 2019.
