Lone Woman Chief Minister of Assam Anowara Taimur No More

GUWAHATI: Assam’s former and lone woman Chief Minister Syeda Anowara Taimur, who was residing in Australia, passed away on Monday evening reportedly due to cardiac arrest.

According to a source, the ex-chief minister of Assam was suffering from chest pain. She was in Australia with her Son since last 4 years.

Taimur remained the Chief Minister of Assam from Dec 6, 1980 to June 30, 1981. Her term as chief minister ended when the state was put under president’s rule for six months. She was elected as a member of the State Assembly in 1972, 1978, 1983 and 1991 and was a Rajya Sabha member in 1988. However, She left the Congress to join the AIUDF in 2011.

Still, Taimur’s name was not there in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) final list in 2018 as she could not apply for it. She planned to return home to initiate the process of enlisting herself and her family in the register of citizens of the State.

She was born in November 24, 1936.

Expressing his concern over the demise of the former chief minister, Assam’s health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “A big loss for us all as former CM Syeda Anwara Taimur breathed her last. An able administrator and affable people’s person, Syeda Mam was the only woman CM of Assam. A 4-term MLA, she had an illustrious political career spanning over 4 decades. My prayers & condolences.”
