Amid the reports over replacing candidates in the Jorhat parliamentary seat, the BJP might replace the sitting MP from Assam’s Jorhat Kamakhya Prasad Tasa in the ensuing Lok Sabha election. According to sources, BJP might give a ticket to Assam Cabinet Minister Topon Kumar Gogoi to contest from the Jorhat constituency.

Tasa won the 2014 Lok Sabha election defeating veteran Congress leader and six-time MP Bijoy Krisha Hadique by a margin of 102,420 votes. As per information, Hadique is all set to a hard fight this election. Handique lost due to the anti-incumbency factor.

According to the schedule declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on March 10th, 2019, polling is scheduled in the Jorhat constituency on April 11th, 2019. Lok Sabha election 2019 will be held in the northeastern states in three phases.

Tasa was beaten by Handique in 2009 Lok Sabha election for the seat that comprises Jorhat and Sivasagar districts of Assam.

The Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency comprises 10 assembly constituencies. Except in 1984, when Parag Chaliha of the AGP won, it had never gone out of the Congress’s hand until Tasa defeated Congress heavyweight Bijoy Krishna Handique in 2014.
