    Magh Bihu fervor grips Assam; wishes pour in from ministers

    The day started with lighting of the ‘Meji’ after which people offer prayers for peace and wellbeing of their families and loved ones.

    Guwahati: People across the state celebrated the auspicious harvest festival Magh Bihu. The day started with lighting of the ‘Meji’ after which people offer prayers for peace and wellbeing of their families and loved ones.

    Uruka is the eve of Boghali Bihu entailing a night of feasting and congregating at a bhelaghar or hut-like structures that are burnt for seeking the blessing of the deities.

    After offering the prayers, people have community breakfasts with Bihu delicacies like pitha, laru, doi-sira.

    On the auspicious occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with other political leaders wished the people of Assam.

    The Prime Minister and home minister both tweeted in Assamese. Shah wrote, “I extend my heartfelt greeting to people of Assam on Magh Bihu. May Maa Kamakhya bless everyone’s lives with happiness, joy and prosperity.”

    Assam CM Sonowal celebrated Magh Bihu at his home town in Dibrugarh. He offered prayers to Meji during the Bihu celebrations.
