Magnificent Mary Kom tops AIBA rankings, becomes World No 1 boxer

Guwahati, January 10: Thirty-five year-old Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte, better known as Mary Kom, has attained number one position in the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) latest world rankings.

It may be noted that Kom defeated Hanna Okhota of Ukraine to win record-equalling sixth gold at the World Boxing Championship at New Delhi. She won the 48 kg light flyweight class to equal the record of Cuban legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful boxer (Men and Women) in the history of World Championships.

The 36-year-old will have to jump to 51 kg in pursuit of her 2020 Olympic dream as 48 kg is not yet included in the Games roster.
