In a significant breakthrough, the Barpeta police busted a motorbike lifting racket by arresting eight persons, allegedly involved in stealing bikes from various public places in the district and Guwahati in Assam. The police recovered as many as 10 stolen bikes from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off, the police launched a search operation and arrested two bike lifters – Raja Roy aka Tapan Roy (23) from Borbori in Baksa district and Tuta Mishra (25) from Nalbari district. Two bikes were seized from their possession – one 220 Pulsar bike without a number plate and one 160 Apache bike bearing registration number AS01BR4932. As per police, the Apache bike was stolen from Guwahati under Geetanagar Police Station.
The interrogation of the two bike lifters led to the arrest of the other members of the racket. Bikash Mandal (19), Safiqul Islam (24), Kismat Ali (38), Sultam Mamud (19), Mazibur Rehman (22), Muksid Ali (52) and Susistan Mandal (19) were also taken into custody based on the statements of the Roy duos. The police recovered as many as eight bikes from their possession.
