Majuli Ferry Mishap: Search Continue For Two Missing; Backpack Recovered
Guwahati: Over 48 hours have passed but the state disaster response force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) divers yet to locate the two missing persons- Bikramjit Barua of Jorhat and Indreswar Bora of Lakhimpur.
Both of them have been missing since the tragic boat accident at Nimatighat on Brahmaputra River on Wednesday. One person has already died in the incident.
On Friday morning, locals in Biswanath found a backpack floating on the river and later discovered that it belonged to missing Bora’s family.
“The bag contains several important documents like Aadhar card and others of his wife. After finding the bag we realized that it must have washed away from the spot and immediately informed police,” locals said.
Immediately, Biswanath police and SDRF have started a search operation in the river at Biswanath too. However, no trace of anyone was found till filing of this report.
The search operation has been carried out by SDRF, NDRF, Air force, Army, deep divers using helicopter, drone etc.
Two ferries collided at Nimati Ghat on Wednesday afternoon with passengers onboard. The accident occurred when the private ferry which was heading towards Majuli from Nimati Ghat collided with another ferry coming from the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, a lecturer from Rongachahi College in Majuli identified as Parimita Das (28) died.
