Mama is Back! Himanta Biswa Sarma To Restart Poll Campaign Today
Guwahati: Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to restart his campaign on Saturday evening from the city. Thanks to the Election Commission of India (ECI) which has decided to relax its 48-hour campaigning ban on the BJP leader to 24 hours and said that he can start campaigning from this evening.
Immediately after the ECI relaxed the ban, Sarma announced that he would join in a roadshow on Saturday evening from Sonaram field to Lal Ganesh covering a 6 km distance in support of Ramendra Narayan Kalita, NDA candidate from west Guwahati Constituency.
Though there were talks that Sarma might challenge the ECI order before the Gauhati high court, Sarma said that he has not challenged the ECI order.
The ECI relaxation came a day before the poll campaigning for the third phase of Assam polls to end on Sunday evening. Sarma, a candidate from the city’s Jalukbari constituency, was yet to held a poll rally in his own constituency.
On Friday, Sarma was barred from campaigning for 48 hours by the ECI over his comments on his rival Hagrama Mohilary, president of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) party which is in alliance with the Congress-led grand alliance.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) had complained before the ECI against Sarma for threatening Mohilary.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Ripun Bora said, “The ECI action came very late. Since the beginning of the poll campaignings, Sarma was violating the model code of conduct (MSS) norms in many ways.”
