GUWAHATI: A Muslim man faked a Hindu identity and married a Hindu woman was arrested in central Assam’s Hojai district on his wife’s complaint.
The woman with the help of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Hojai, file a written complaint against her husband with the Hojai superintendent of police, said official.
According to the sources, the woman hailing from upper Assam’s Dhemaji area, she met the man since they both used to work in Tamil Nadu.
Woman claims that the man, who is from Nakhuti’s 2 Sarke Basti area in Lumding police station in Hojai district, disguised his religious identity and married her and started torturing her mentally and physically.
Her husband allegedly looted a big sum of money from her and left to Assam’s Nakhuti region after a few months, she claimed.
According to the sources, her spouse had not contacted her, the woman travelled to Hojai’s Doboka district, where she learned about her husband’s true religious identity and other details.
On receiving the complaint, Hojai superintendent of police dispatched a squad from Lumding Police Station to catch the accused in his village on Wednesday night.
The accused was detained the same night and appeared in a local court in Hojai on Thursday.
“It’s a case of ‘love jihad,’ in which a man of one faith pretended to be of another in order to marry the woman”, said official.
