A 25-year-old man committed suicide in Bihudia village in Assam’s Darrang district after allegedly failing to appear National Register of Citizens (NRC) hearing.

As per information, the deceased – Asmat Ali son of Fakir Ali, who allegedly failed to manage money to travel to appear the hearing, allegedly consumed poison following an argument with his wife and father on May 14th, 2019. Later, he was admitted to the nearby hospital in a critical condition for medical assistance. Ali died on May 16th, 2019.

“He asked us for money to travel to appear the NRC hearing. But, we had no money to give him. We did not think that the consequence will be this. He was in fear after he received the notice from the NRC authority,” one of the family members of Ali said.

An additional NRC draft will be published on June 15th, 2019. The complete NRC draft was published on July 30th, 2018.

It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court on May 8th, 2019 (Wednesday) made it clear that the July 31st, 2019 deadline for the final NRC publication will not be extended and further gave a “free-hand” to state NRC co-ordinator Prateek Hajela to deal with the claims and objectives of the people excluded from the draft.
