Manhunt continues to track JEE ‘proxy’ candidate

The FIR stated that the student had left the examination centre after completing his biometric attendance

GUWAHATI: Search continued for at least two of the prime accused in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) exam scam of the state.

Assam Police which so far nabbed at least five persons in connection with the case have already launched a manhunt to nab the duo- owner of a coaching institute and an employee of a leading IT company.

The owner of a coaching institute, identified as one Bhargav Deka, had allegedly provided a ‘proxy’ for the accused student Neel Nakshatra Das to score 99.8% of marks in the exam.

Five persons, including Das, his father, and an invigilator, were arrested on Wednesday and being quizzed by a special police team. A court here has sent them to police custody for five days on Thursday.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Suprative Lal Baruah said, “The proxy candidate who appeared in the exam is on the run now. Few more arrests are to follow in the case.”

Police have also contacted the National Testing Agency, which has conducted the examination across the country and sought information related to the exam. The examination was held on September 5.

The scam came to the fore following Azara police registering a case based on a complaint by one Mitradev Sharma, on October 23 who accused Neel Nakshatra Das of using an impersonator to appear for the test on his behalf.

The FIR stated that Das had left the examination centre at Borjhar area, after completing his biometric attendance and swapped his position with a ‘proxy’ with the help of the invigilator. It was also alleged that Das’s parents paid around Rs 20 lakh to the coaching centre to allot the ‘proxy’ examinee.
