Manipur congress follows Assam strategy in election, forms six-party alliance

Guwahati: The Congress has replicated its Assam strategy by forming a grand alliance with six political parties, including the Left in Manipur, where state elections are due next month.

According to sources, Congress, the CPI, the CPM, the RSP, the Forward Block and the Janata Dal Secular are the alliance name which will be announced soon and will have a Common Minimum Programme.

In Assam’s last year election the congress formed 10-party grand alliance, calling it a Mahajot.

However, the experiment was a failure with the alliance gaining just 50 of the 126 seats in the state.

The state’s former Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh stated that the alliance has been created for the assembly elections. The six like-minded secular parties have banded together with similar cause to contest in the elections.

The CPI’s state secretary Satin Kumar claim that we created this alliance for the state elections because an undemocratic, unconstitutional, communal party is in power on our territory. The BJP has acted against the working class through its neoliberal politics, so it is time for secular parties to unite to defeat the BJP.

The parties have agreed that the CPI will nominate its candidate in the Khurai assembly constituency alone, while the Congress will nominate candidates in the majority of the remaining seats.

The Congress has already announced its first list of 40 candidates for this election while the CPI has announced 2 candidates.

Election will be held for 60 assembly seats of Manipur in two phases on February 27 and March 3. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
