Guwahati: The National People’s Party (NPP) issued the first list of 20 candidates for the two-phase Manipur assembly elections on Monday.

The NPP, which is a alliance  partner of the BJP-led government, is standing alone in this year’s assembly elections. The party intends to run for 40 seats in the 60-member assembly.

Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joy Kumar Singh (Uripok assembly constituency), sitting MLAs L. Jayanta Kumar Singh (Keishamthong seat) and N. Kayisii (Tadubi seat) were among the candidates selected by NPP’s National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.

Joy Kumar Singh, the chief of the NPP’s Election Management Committee, has hinted that the party might name more candidates soon.

The NPP issued its election manifesto on January 23 and committed to take steps to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from Manipur. The party also emphasised the defence of indigenous people’s rights.

The 60-member Manipur assembly will be elected in 2022 on February 27 and March 3. The vote counting will take place on March 10.
