Manipur Govt to urge Centre to exempt State from Citizenship Bill’s purview

Imphal, January 11: Amidst the widespread protests across the state against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and strong opposition by the other Northeastern states to the Bill, the Manipur government decided to urge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to exempt the state from the Bill’s purview. The
Manipur cabinet took the decision to urge the Centre to exempt the State from the Bill’s jurisdiction and to give assent to the Manipur People’s Protection (MPP) Bill, 2018.
The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 but the Bill failed to pass the session in the Rajya Sabha.
The cabinet meeting was convened to review the situation arising out of the passage of the Bill in the Lower House in the Parliament.
The objective of the MPP Bill, 2018, that was passed by the Manipur Assembly and moved to the President of India for his assent, is to protect the interest of people of the state.
