Guwahati: Shangshak Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled timber smuggling in Manipur’s Kamjong District, official said on Saturday.
As per sources, the Assam Rifles troops intercepted two trucks loaded with illegal timber in the Pushing village of the district.
However, on enquiring, truck drivers could not produce legitimate documents of timber. The seized timber is evaluated to be worth Rs 2.56 crore, officials added.
Meanwhile, the team also apprehended four persons in this connection.

However, the arrested smugglers along with the seized timber and vehicles have been handed over to Forest Department for further legal action, sources said.
