Manipur: Poumai Naga areas declared ‘drug free zone’

Guwahati: The Poumai Naga community has declared Poumai area in the state a “drug free zone,” supporting chief minister N Biren Singh’s “War on Drugs” campaign.

On April 28, the Poumai general body meeting passed a resolution to this effect and against poppy plantation. Paomai is Manipur’s second largest Naga tribe, with its headquarters in Senapati.

A large delegation of the Poumai tribe, led by MLA J Kumo Sha of Senapati’s Karong seat and leaders of several civil groups in the community, presented a copy of the resolution to Biren Singh at his official bungalow on Saturday.

Paomai leaders in the delegation included Poumai Naga Union president D Dailord Pao, Poumai Naga Women’s Union president P Delilah Pao, and former United Naga Council (UNC) president Paul Leo.

The CM praised the Poumai tribe for their resolution and declaration, saying it was both encouraging and supportive of the government’s war against drugs.

Singh urged all communities and tribes to join the movement and reiterated his stand that there will be no compromise on the illegal drug issue.
