Manipur: Three Myanmarese escape from temporary prison in Churachandpur

Guwahati: At least three Myanmar nationals under judicial custody have escaped from a temporary jail in Manipur’s Churachandpur, officials said on Monday.

As per the official, they were missing since 8 am on Sunday.

They identified the escapees as Winmintay (28), Win Naing Thon (27), and Biaka (17). They were detained under the Foreigners Act for illegally entering India and were at the Temporary Jail of the Churachandpur district.

Win Naing Thon and Winmintay had been at the Temporary jail since April 4, 2021, while Biaka was detained on March 29, 2022.

There were 45 inmates, including nine children, in the temporary jail and that two women inmates had died, official sources said.

However, police have launched a manhunt to nab the escaped prison inmates

Notably, most inmates were arrested after they entered Manipur illegally following the coup in Myanmar in 2021 and at the height of the Covid pandemic.

In June 2022, as many as 80 Myanmar nationals, including 25 men, 35 women, and 20 minors, were apprehended by police and lodged in the temporary jail.
