Manipur University row | Pro-VC’s letter against Najma Heptulla reprimanded

Imphal, October 8: The Manipur Governor office has reprimanded Manipur University (MU) Pro Vice Chancellor in-charge, Prof K Yugindro Singh, after the latter, in a letter to the HRD Ministry, accused her of favouring student agitators.

Prof Yugindro has remarked that the agitating students are like “terrorists” and that his life is at risk. He sent a letter to Union HRD Ministry on October 1, contending that Governor Najma Heptulla and Chief Minister N Biren were siding with “terrorists”.

In a letter to Prof Yugindro on October 6, the Raj Bhawan also regretted the branding of students and teachers of the varsity as “terrorists”. The Raj Bhawan further stated that such statements could lead to a further worsening of the situation on campus.

“The Governor of Manipur is upset and surprised by your utterances, which are misdirected and misleading. The situation in the campus aggravated since you took over the as vice-chancellor (in-charge) and the police were called in to deal with the students,” reads the Raj Bhawan letter.

The letter also mentioned that the Governor is the constitutional head of the State and such a statement against the Governor may amount to defamation and crossed the limits of protocol.
