Manipur University row | Pro Vice Chancellor, Registrar suspended


Imphal, October 12: Pro Vice Chancellor (VC) of Manipur University (MU) Prof K Yugindro was suspended on Thursday by the Manipur High Court on Thursday.

Former chief secretary of Manipur, Jarnail Singh, has been appointed as an administrator to discharge the function of the VC of the varsity.

The court had stated that the prolonged disruption and crisis in the University is not in public interest and hence, failing to resolve the crisis by the authorities concerned, the court may not have other option but to interfere in the affairs and management of the university which the court would not have done otherwise.

Singh is fully empowered to discharge the functions of the VC as provided under the Manipur University Act, 2005. As per the court order, his primary duty and responsibility is to bring normalcy in Manipur University.

It may be noted that Singh also served as joint secretary to the office of the Prime Minister. He was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for the year 2007. He had also been the Chief Secretary of Manipur from 2004 to 2008.

The court directed that the appointment orders of Shyamo Singh registrar in-charge and W Vishwanath Singh vice chancellor in-charge be suspended. The court also directed the Visitor of the varsity and union respondents to ensure that the suspension order of incumbent vice-chancellor of MU Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, is continued during the continuation of the office of the court-appointed administrator.
