The Manipur People Against Citizenship bill (MANPAC) on February 6th, 2019 launched an ‘on road mass indefinite agitation’ in protest against the ‘contentious’ Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Protestors demanded scrapping of the bill and warned to continue agitation until the Bill is withdrawn for the greater caused of the indigenous people of the entire Northeast region.

MANPAC convener Yumnamcha Dilip condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government’s proposal to insert a clause in the bill and said, “Such move of the government will not be tolerated. ” Besides, slamming the Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the government’s move to implement the bill, he termed the bill as ‘unconstitutional’. “The bill would jeopardize the existence of the indigenous people of the entire Northeast region,” he added. MANPAC urged the people of the state to stand in unison against the bill.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 8th, 2019. However, the bill was rejected in the Rajya Sabha on January 9th, 2019. Recently, BJP’s national general secretary Ram Madhav in Guwahati confirmed that the saffron party will bring the bill as supplement in the Rajya Sabha.
