Guwahati: Almost after seven hours of struggle, one person identified as Bharat Kalita was rescued after he was trapped under debris following a massive landslide damaged the house he was living in at Kahilipara area in the city on Friday.
However, one woman identified as Usha Bora, who suffered injuries in the accident reportedly died in the hosptial.
Two other residents also suffered serious injuries and undergoing medical attention. They luckily escaped the accident as they were out in open when the incident happened.
The landslide took place at around 7.45 AM near the Kahilipara power house area. Continuous downpour for the last couple of days has resulted in a massive landslide across the city.
Both National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel struggled to rescue Kalita since morning.
Police said the wall of the house was completely damaged due to the landslide.
“A guard gave away as a result of the landslide that fell on a residence. A portion of the wall seemed to have fallen over his legs and trapped him. The victim is alive,” police sources said.
A medical team was also engaged to provide Kalita with necessary life support on the spot during the rescue operation.
Guwahati Development Department (GDD) minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjee too visited the spot.
Meanwhile, landslide happened in Maligaon area too. However, no major damage was reported from there.
Several trees have fallen on city roads disrupting traffic. Restoration works were on.
Landslide in Assam has killed at least 22 persons this year so far.
