Meghalaya: Chaos at Cherry Blossom fest; Tear gas shell used

Guwahati: The much acclaimed Cherry Blossom Festival in Shilling of Meghalaya witnessed was marred by chaos and violence as visitors clashed with local police forcing them to fire tear gas shells to disperse the unruly mob.

Angry over not being let inside the festival arena at the JN Sports Complex in Polo for the evening’s entertainment festivities on the second day of the festival, a group of people confronted the police deployed at the venue.

Locals claimed that trouble began after the authorities denied entry to the public after 7 pm.

When the angry mod started vandalizing the festival properties, signage and reportedly tried to break in the gates, clash occurred. Bottles were also reportedly hurled at the police forcing the police to use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. A few persons were also detained.

The festival coincides with the blooming of pink cherry blossom flowers around this time of the year. The event was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic last year.
