Meghalaya CM with ruling coalition discusses border pact with Assam

Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma convened a meeting of the ruling MDA coalition’s coordination committee on Thursday, when the border accord with Assam and other issues were reviewed.

The objective of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) meeting was to bring together the leaders of coalition partners to discuss various issues concerning the state, Sangma stated.

The boundary problem caused significant concern among coalition members. As a result, we’ve provided them with additional information. None of them has suggested reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Meghalaya and Assam to settle the boundary dispute in six of the twelve areas of concern, CM claimed.

However, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was also discussed at the meeting, Sangma added.

Meghalaya CM further stated that the letter from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan came while we were in the meeting, so it was kind of convenient for us.

He particularly added that colleges connected with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) can continue with their current system of undergraduate admission, implying that the CUET will not be taken.

According to sources, Pradhan explained in a letter to Sangma that the exemption was granted for this academic year due to geographical conditions, far-flung places and limited digital connectivity and infrastructure.

Starting this academic year, CUET has been introduced for admission to courses at all central universities.

On April 25, the chief minister met with Pradhan to request an exemption for Meghalaya colleges.
