Meghalaya: Gates Of Umiam Dam Likely To Be Opened, Possible Floods In Assam’s Two Districts

Guwahati: The Deputy Commissioners of two districts of Assam, Kamrup (M) and Kamrup (R) have been issued a letter by the Meghalaya administration on Friday.

According to the official letter states that there is a possibility of flood downstream of Umiam River and the areas beyond the Umiam Dam.

The Chief Engineer (C), Hydro Planning & Hydro Construction, Maintenance & Small Hydro, MePGCL, Shillong informed that the possible release of excess water from Umiam Dam.

Therefore, they requested to make public announcement, said official.

The two districts of Assam have been put on high alert due to possible floods.

On Friday, atleast 12 people lost their lives due to rain related incidents in Meghalaya, while nine died due to landslides, three lost their lives in the flash floods that occurred at Baghmara in South Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, around 40 thousand people with 107 villages have been affected due to floods in South West Garo Hills district.
